Pierre Jules Mene sculpted very few birds in his long and successful career. This bronze sculpture of a pheasant is one of his more obscure sculptures.  Mene preferred to create domestic animals and dogs rather than game birds as his patrons were Parisians who longed for the simple farm life or could relate easier to saddle and carriage horses rather than game animals.

This bronze sculpture was formerly the property of Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge and was in her extensive collection of French animalier bronzes until her death.
